The Nerd's "Reading Program" Grows Up
Ever since I can remember, I have always loved learning and devoured books, web pages and videos in service of… some mysterious subconscious drive. (more on that later).
I remember reading the encyclopedia at recess in 4th grade, getting teased for being a nerd but then coming home to explain to my great-grandmother how the inner ear worked and why it was affecting her balance.
As a new grad pharmacist, I had plenty of time in the pharmacy on the crappy shifts (nights and weekends) to read magazines and books. I remember I lugged around a black briefcase filled with gems like Popular Mechanics, Psychology Today, and Forbes. Whenever I found an interesting article I would make photocopies of it, and keep them in my briefcase. I took that treasure trove of info everywhere, eager to share cool tidbits with friends or even intrigued strangers. One day I was at happy hour with my friends and as usual, I had my info stash with me, at the bar! My buddy Rob started a conversation about something in mortgage finance and I remembered reading about that subject in Forbes, so I whipped out a photocopy of the article and handed it to him as part of the conversation. My buddy rolled his eyes and exclaimed “Oh Lord, it’s Barry’s Reading Program again!”. We all laughed. I’ve always figured if something piques my interest, someone else out there will find it captivating too. And if you’re in my close circle, you’re likely nodding right now, recalling all the articles and videos I’ve enthusiastically nudged your way. A personal coaching chapter of my life had me setting some hefty goals. One of them? “Craft an online treasure trove of all I've learned for my children. A legacy of knowledge, so they can truly understand their father.” Thus, was born the first draft of “Messages from the Heart.” But a revelation awaited me: My Human Design. Now, the varied puzzle pieces of my life came together. My Human Design personality profile is 3/5 “The Great Life Experimenter”. Jenna Zoe pens the 3/5 as “Constantly Dancing with Life and here to lift everyone up with the findings of that dance. All the experimenting and experience makes the 3/5’s subject matter experts on life, the ups and the downs, the good and the bad, the messiness of it all, and the beauty of it all.” By living in alignment with my design, my life has been filled with fun and extraordinary experiences, as well as trauma, abuse, and deep emotional pain. But I realize I am here to see the amazingness of this physical life on earth, delve into the realm of spirit, live it all on the front lines, and report back to everyone. The format has evolved but the goal is the same. To share it all, in some cases bravely, and in the process heal myself, and maybe help heal someone else in the world and make a friend or two along the way. I am writing for my past present and future self. I am writing to my children who will read this in the future. But you have a front row, intimate seat so I am writing also to you and for you. I hope my experiences can benefit your life in some way and catalyze your own inner wisdom. With Love for all beings, Barry PS the picture (top, left) is of me and my best friend from high school. Whom I am very close with today. Staying Young at Heart is one of my highest values, and this guy has had my back since the beginning. He is the definition of brotherhood.
